Some of the customs charges applied to imported vehicles in New Zealand, include:

• GST – Goods and services tax of 15 percent. GST is calculated on the customs value of the vehicle, plus duty (if any), plus the cost of shipping the vehicle to New Zealand (including insurance charges).
• IEFT – An import entry transaction fee of $29.26 will be required for motor vehicles valued at $1,000 or more.
• Biosecurity – A biosecurity system entry levy of $19.98 is collected by Customs on behalf of the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).

*Concessionary Entry: A person arriving in New Zealand who on the date of importation of the goods holds a document authorizing residence in New Zealand has the ability to import a motor vehicle, motorcycle, and/or small ship without having to pay the standard GST.

When importing a motor vehicle to New Zealand from the USA some of the documentation you’ll need includes:

New Vehicles

• Statement of Compliance – lists the standards to which a vehicle was certified when it was manufactured.

Used Vehicles

• Proof of Ownership – deregistration or change of ownership papers or a USA certificate of origin plus an invoice, bill of sale or receipt, etc.
• Emissions Standards – an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) label or a statement of compliance that includes an approved emission standard.
• Frontal Impact & Overall Standards – an FMVSS (US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) plate or a statement of compliance.
• Fuel Consumption Certificate

All new or used motor vehicles, including motorcycles, imported into New Zealand must be certified by NZ Transport Agency (NZTA)-approved certifiers as complying with New Zealand legal requirements, before they can be registered for use on public roads in New Zealand. Vehicle imports into New Zealand from the USA must also be converted to New Zealander specifications, including emissions, lights and other vehicle parts that must be updated before exporting the vehicle from the states.
